We are currently running Jira Software 8.13.15 on or internal test instance. We want to upgrade that to 8.13.20. The original instance was installed using the linux binary installer.  The upgrade notes say:

Avoid using this upgrade method if you initially installed Jira using the binary installer (.exe on Windows or .bin on Linux). Upgrading binary installations manually is not supported and is known to cause problems on startup.

But there is no link that shows how to do an upgrade then or suggest an upgrade method.  Any thoughts?

Hi Patrick,

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

In regards to upgrading, the recommendation would be to upgrade your solution the same way it was installed.  So for example, if you installed the Jira instance using the binary installer, then you would want to upgrade it using the binary installer.  Or if you installed using an archive file you would want to upgrade using an archive file methods as well.

The Upgrading Jira (Installer) document discusses the upgrade process using the binary installer route.  At the top of this page you will see a similar warning that you referenced just regarding the zip file instead.

So if your instance was installed using a binary installer to start with, you would want to follow the instructions provided in the link I attached above.

Does that help to answer your question?  If I have misunderstood your question or you have additional questions I would be happy to discuss further.

Thanks,

Andy
