Has anyone got any comments/concerns about JIRA Portfolio vs the BIgPicture plugin.

Our major concerns are around resource planning both people and facilities.   Also we aren't truly an Agile shop but we follow some of the principles while our delivery is still waterfall.

BigPicture is the best option when you have many project and many teams which members are responsible for different tasks in more than one project. Thanks to this plugin you can see how much work certains team member has. Thanks to this plugin you can create fancy gantt chart and complex roadmap. There are 2 versions of this plugin(standard and enterprise). If you have many teams I recommend enterprise.

Basically Portfolio is for this same purpose but it is developed by Atlassian. It is more oriented on team and release.

If you have any more question feel free to ask here.

Michal provided an excellent answer. Both solutions are used for portfolio management, and simply have a different approach and set of features. Since you mentioned having waterfall delivery and mixed processes in general, BigPicture will be a great choice because it has Gantt charts, which are VERY handy for waterfall and mixed needs.

Resource management is somewhat similar, that is both tools let you define your resources and sort them into Teams. BigPicture is slightly more robust when it comes to managing the defined teams and members, especially latest versions and Enterprise edition in particular.

A comparison of these plugins can be found here, it will also be updated soon: https://softwareplant.atlassian.net/wiki/display/COMPARE/Portfolio+management+comparison?src=contextnavpagetreemode
