Logged time report

Daniel Wilson June 23, 2025

We recently migrated to Jira in the cloud from our old self-hosted Jira.

Now I need to collect the time logged for a six-month upgrade spread over approximately 20 issues.

How do I get a report to do this?

I can easily see the individual work logs. But our bookkeeper does NOT want to add up hundreds of logs by hand. We're on 21st century software, after all!

But when I click the View Report button, It cannot find ANY logged work.

Specifying one issue seems simple enough, and that doesn't work. I really want to specify my saved query. Which, if I try it ... it shows me 3 hours for one task. Out of 20 tasks. And there are actually more hours for the chosen task.

As recently as May 30th, looking in the individual tasks, the work logs gave a total for the task. Now they don't even do that.

The data are here, but irretrievable!

But Jira is far more capable than this. So ... what am I doing wrong?

Hi @Daniel Wilson

It looks like you are using Tempo Time sheets. Most likely the problem is either related to configuration of the report in Tempo or that you lack permisstions (View worklogs, Browse projects or View All Worklogs)

I am not an expert on Tempo Time sheets but maybe this page can help you in finding a solution Generating Reports

Hi @Daniel Wilson! 👋

Tempo is a solid tool, but sometimes it takes a fair bit of setup to get reports working properly. In cases like this, it's best to reach out to their support — their Slack channel has been responsive in the past.

If you're open to exploring an alternative, JetTime might be worth a try. It’s a Runs on Atlassian, privacy-first time & cost tracking app that offers a very flexible reporting system — including:

  • Time reports based on any JQL filter or saved query

  • Easy grouping and filtering (e.g., by issue, project, user, date, or even custom worklog fields)

  • Simple totals without the need to export or manually calculate anything

It’s designed to make reports effortless — especially for non-technical users like bookkeepers — and to stay very close to the native Jira experience. Happy to share more or help you try it out!

Hello @Daniel Wilson

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Based on the second image you provided you appear to be using a third party app for timesheets. Which one are you using?

Are you trying to get the time logged in total for each issue or are you trying to get time logged per person?

With native Jira time tracking capabilities you can get the total time logged against an issue through the Time Spent field. You can include the Time Spent field in the columns of the output of a filter (using the List View) to see the total time logged against each issue.

Jira does not natively offer a report for getting time logged per user.

If it is true that you have access to a third party app for time tracking and reporting I would suggest reviewing the documentation for that app to determine its capabilities. And if you tell us which app your using, then somebody in the community may be able to offer you advice specifically applicable to that app.

Time logged per user, but filtered down to a small group of issues.

I don't THINK I'm using a 3rd-party app for it.

I'm open to recommendations. I've already wasted more time than a year's subscription to an app should cost.

What is your level of access in this environment? Are you a Jira Application Administrator, or a Project Administrator for some Jira project, or a user with no Administrative access?

If you click on the Apps menu, what options do you see?

I am moderately confident that you have a third party app available to you for time reporting because the Timesheets option you see in the panel on the left is not a native feature.

If you don't have Administrator access I suggest that you send a query to your Jira Administrators to ask about that Timesheets option.

@Trudy Claspill , you're right. I see a lot more on that Apps menu than I expected. Including Temp, TimeTracker, and TimeTracker Reporting.

I'll get some help from one of them ...

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'm new to the administration.

It would be great if you report back here which app these turns out to be, and what you learn about the functionality. It might help somebody else searching this community for answers.

Tempo started working.

I did create a group / permission in the Tempo configuration ... and some time after that the reports started working. But not right away.

Thanks to everyone for the help!
