We used to have the ability to change the status on the board from the ticket itself last week but now it has disappeared? Is this a setting that has been disabled somewhere?

Yes, the disappearance is certainly from the configuration in your project's board settings or workflow conditions.
You can check the following configurations.
1. They may be conditioned on the appropriate transition. Check the workflow transition conditions.
2. Each column has mapped statuses; if someone removed that status from the column, then quick status transition will not be available.
Will be glad to hear feedback, if it works or not.

its working again! We arent sure how its working cause our go to Jira Admin is away. Not sure if someone else fixed it but it is good to know for next time with your information.
