New Jira project project type doesn't support epics?

I created a project using the new Jira project type and although I was able to create epics, I'm seeing behavior below which is preventing me from using epics with the new project type:

- when I try to view the epics (by adding Epic to the list view of search results) the epic name is not showing up.

- when I write this jqr, Jira doesn't return anything: "Epic Name" is not EMPTY

New *next-gen* projects in Jira cloud currently offer limited capability around ability to search epics in JQL and display epicName/ epicLink in the issue navigator view.
