Access JIRA issues via Jira REST API

We are creating an intake process to automate the JIRA ticket creation.

I’m trying to access JIRA issues via Jira REST API but its giving a 401 or 403 error (Access denied or forbidden) error. I’m using CURL or nodejs wrapper.

I do have Jira admin access

How to get access to the JIRA API and what authentication should I use (token based, basic (user/password)?
