Can't get a license when upgrading to JIRA 7.6 to enable cloud migration

Jeff Anderson September 1, 2024

We have a 7.5 JIRA instance running on Centos 6 and Postgres 8 (no jokes please :-).  We want to move the data to JIRA cloud.   We need 7.6 or later to get the migration tool to help us with that.   I managed to create a copy running on Centos 8 and Postgres 9 with all attachments.   My next step was to upgrade that instance, but after the upgrade it tells me my (expired) license is too old, and I can renew my license on my.atlassian.com.   But that option doesn't seem enabled for 7.6.   It tells me to contact Atlassian for options, but starting down that path I end up asking the community because I don't have current support.   I don't mind buying a license if it's affordable... I just don't see a path to getting 7.6 up and licensed.

Thanks for any assistance or ideas!

Hi @Jeff Anderson ,

Regarding your situation with upgrading Jira to version 7.6 for cloud migration, here are a few options to consider:

Check for Overlapping License Periods

Review if any earlier versions of Jira 7.6 overlap with your expired license period. If so, you might be able to use that license to perform the upgrade.

Upgrade Using a Data Center Trial License

Since new Server trial licenses are no longer available, you can use a Data Center trial license to upgrade your Jira instance. This trial license can be applied to your Server installation, enabling you to upgrade to a later version of Jira (like 7.6 or even higher) to facilitate migration. The trial license lasts for 30 days, but you can request an extension to 90 days if needed.

Tip: Consider Upgrading to a Much Later Version

Consider upgrading to a later version of Jira that still supports cloud migration tools. You can use the Data Center trial license mentioned above for this purpose.

Atlassian Support

If the above options don’t resolve your issue, reaching out to Atlassian support could provide additional guidance. They might be able to assist with licensing or offer advice specific to your situation.

Please consult Atlassian documentation explicitly covering case on migrating to cloud with an expired Server license:

https://support.atlassian.com/migration/docs/migrate-to-cloud-with-an-expired-server-license/

Please let me know if this helps!

Pears

Thanks, when I restarted to get the server ID for the data center license, JIRA 7.6 offered to generate a trial license for me, which meets my needs.

In order to enable the "Boards" link in the header, I had to generate the data center license and then paste it into the expire JIRA license under the licenses configuration page.

Hi @Jeff Anderson ,

Great to hear that you’ve resolved the issue and found a way to generate the trial license for your migration!

Since the solution has been found, would you consider accepting one of the answers (including your own) as the accepted solution? Doing so will help other users quickly find the resolution when they encounter a similar issue.

Thanks, and let me know if you need anything else!

Best regards,
Pears
