Custom Field, like Label, that gives known list in Search Issues

I created a new custom field, with the Labels type. This is great because it remembers the previously entered values from all other issues.

However, the default Label field also gives a list of these values when in the Search Issues page. Is there a way to enable that for a custom field as well (I've looked, but can't find anything in the field configuration).

It seems that in the "Advanced" search box, it does give you an auto-complete drop down. But is there a way to make it show the list of them in the "Basic" search box, each with a checkbox for easy multiple selection, like it does for the non-custom field "Label".
