Drag&drop issues - doesnt highlight available statuses within a column

Rajpold, Mateusz January 16, 2024

The problem i am trying to solve is that as far as i understand, to change the status within a given column you need to do it from issue itself (change it from the status drop down).

I would like to be able to drag&drop between statuses (if workflows allows for that specific transition obviously) within a single column. Is that possible?

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

No, the boards do not support drag and drop between status in the same column.

Atlassian have closed all the feature requests for it with "won't do", and the reminder that a column is supposed to represent a step in a flow - if you want to move between status, they should be mapped into different columns!

Thank you! I am not sure i understand the reasoning though. If thats the case, and it sounds like it is, then i dont think i see a solution/scenario for using multiple statuses per column. Probably only when you want parallel workstreams each of which has different statuses per column but still overall steps (columns) are the same. But again... if that the scenario what would be the point in creating sub-statuses instead of just calling them all with the name of the column... I dont think i get that.

There are two main uses for multiple status in a column:

You may have items that are created with different status (for example, Bugs start with "new" and tasks "to do".  You would want them to land in the first column of a board.

Similarly, the last column of the board should contain all your end status - done, complete, cancelled, etc

In both of those cases, there is no need for you to be moving status within the column.

There's a third scenario - when an issue passes through many teams during its life, you probably want it to cross many boards, that may overlap.  The simplest case of this is when one a team is done with an issue, another team picks it up.  The first team will need all the status after their "done" in the right-hand column.

Ok thank you for explanation. I still dont get why Jira insists it wouldnt make sense to transition through statuses within a single column (i can easily imagine processes which would require that), but i need to live with what is provided. Thanks again anyways for your comments!

Let me attach a picture which might explain.

In this board i am grabbing a test issue from the Implementation columnet.

All the blue rectangles in other columns show me possible transitions for that issue.

Column Design is restricted in this case so there is no status available in Design column which i could transition to.

Thats all perfect, however, there are other 3 statuses in 'Implemetation' and they should be available for transition of this test issue but for some reason they do not show up as available.

So if i want to transition to other status in 'Implementation' i need to do it from issue level by using its drop down status menu, not by drag and drop which is far more convenient for users. The inconsistency will i am sure cause confusion among team members and i would like to make it easier for them.board.png

Can this be blocked somehow in the settings?

Hi @Rajpold, Mateusz

I believe so. If you grab hold of the issue (ie. mouse-down on an issue and start to drag), Jira should display boxes with dotted lines in columns mapped to more than one status. Drop the issue in the desired box and the status should change.

Either I dont fully undestand what you mean or i wasnt clear with my description...

I can drag and drop to available statuses in other columns. I cant change it within the same column. It just doesnt show current column statuses as available when i drag an issue with mouse if that makes sense...

So if i have an 'in progress' column with 3 statuses: implementation-review-testing

and my workflow enforces going through all of them before moving to next column (lets say 'done') i cant drag and drop between implementation-review-testing. While in 'in progress' i need to manualy select new status from issue status drop down list, and only when it reaches testing i can drag and drop to 'done' column...

I just dont get why it works like that, seems counter intuitive and i know i will be struggling explaining that to a team...

I see, then I would go with setting those three statuses to have a checkbox where it says "Allow all of the issues to be added to this status", this will allow you to move the issues around the board.

Rajpold, Mateusz January 16, 2024

Thats not the reason... Workflow-wise it is allowed.

Hello @Rajpold, Mateusz ,

Welcome to the Atlassian community!

You can also change the issue status within the "Issues" feature, where based on the search (basic or JQL) you can change the statuses of your issues.

BR,

Nikola

Ok but it is still using different mechanism to move between intra-column statuses, while i would like to transition via drag & drop for both intra and inter-column statuses

I explained in more detail what i am trying to achieve in my reply to previous response
