Grouping my board by teams (Swimlanes)

Scott MacKenzie February 20, 2024

I have an existing board being used by multiple teams. I want to be able to group swimlanes on the board by teams.

I've already set up all of my teams and I've added the team field to the ticket types in project settings.

Firstly can I make the team field inherit the team from the assignee if that assignee has been allocated to a team?

Then how can I create swimlanes for each team?

Hello @Scott MacKenzie

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

A user can belong to more than one Team, so attempting to automate the setting of the Team field based on the Assignee's membership in a Team is very complicated. You would have to determine to which Teams the user belongs, and then decide which one you would use in the Team field if there is more than one Team.

For creating Swimlanes:

1. Are you working with a Team Managed project or a Company Managed project?

1.a. For a Team Managed project it isn't possible to set up custom swimlanes, and there is not a predefined option to use the Teams field for swimlanes.

1.b. Likewise there is not a predefined option to use the Teams field for swimlanes in Company Managed project boards. You would have to set your Swimlanes option to Queries. You would then have to manually construct a query for each Team value, like this:

Hi @Scott MacKenzie

welcome to the Community!

You can create Swimlanes based on Queries (JQL Querie that filters your team field).

For automatic assignment of the team you should try to use Jira Automation.
