How can you ensure correct formatting of text / attachments in comments displays in new issue view?

Sam Dunne February 12, 2019

When adding a new comment to a ticket (or updating an existing comment), formatting of text and file attachments do not render correctly when the comment is saved. Instead, you see the markdown.

This only appears to be an issue in the new issue view, although there is now no longer the ability to adjust text formatting or upload files in comments on the old view.

This is particularly problematic when adding screenshots.

Can anyone outline whether this is something that can be corrected in set-up or whether this would point to a problem for Atlassian to fix?

Hello Sam,

Welcome to Atlassian community!

The new issue view uses markdown formatting, differently from the Old view which uses Wiki Markup, however, both are turned on/off in the same way: By enabling the Wiki Style Renderer in the filed configuration.

About this sentence:

This only appears to be an issue in the new issue view, although there is now no longer the ability to adjust text formatting or upload files in comments on the old view.

Actually, the ability to adjust text formatting or upload files in comments still works on the old view too, unless you have changed the renderer to the default text renderer. It would block both views to render the text formatting.

That been said, please perform the steps below to make sure the wiki Style Renderer is turned on to your comment field:

- Navigate to your project > Project Settings > Fields > Actions > Edit Fields

- Find the Comment field and click on Renderers

- In the drop-down, select the option Wiki Style Renderer and save it

We will be waiting for your answer.

Hi Petterson,

Thanks for the explanation, good to hear it can be sorted through our set up!

We're actually using field configurations for several issue types. These field configurations don't have the comments field added - can you please explain how to add them in the configuration?

Once added I'll be able to go through the steps you've outlined.

Thanks,

Sam

Hello Sam,

Actually, the comment field is automatically added by default to every field configuration and there is no way to remove it on JIRA Cloud.

Could you please double check if you are not able to find the comment field in the field configuration of your project? Try to search for "Comment":

Hi Petterson,

Thanks for the quick response.

Strangely, I couldn't see the comment field in our newly created configurations but having checked today I can now see them.

I've made the change to the field configuration to set Wiki Style Renderer for comments and that has worked. Many thanks!

Hi Petterson,

I have the same issue with the rendering of the Description field in all of our tickets. I've checked the settings as you described before, but it says that it's using the Wike Style Rendering. However, my colleague can't see the rendering correctly. He's using the new design of the issue view. I do see everything correctly rendered, but I'm using the old design.

Is there a way to set this for both the old as the new design?

Hi, All!

My organization is presently experiencing the same issue except for the Description field. I've examined the Audit Log for any changes made that could potentially have been the cause to no avail. Wiki Style Renderer is presently selected. I've attempted to re-select it then 'Update' it also to no avail.

Thank you,
