How to disable email notification when users are added to a project

VFPA June 24, 2025

There is an admin notification email that is sent to users when they are added to the Jira standard (cloud) project. Is there a way to suppress this email notification?

I checked notification scheme, global email settings, automation rules, user access settings or user invites but can't find anything to control these emails to users.Jira user added to project email notification.jpg

Hey @VFPA

It is a notification send to ORG admins when a user has joined the domain.

not related to specific project.

Do you have Atlassian Guard?
If so, you can control that if you'll go to user management and in the upper menu select "App" and on the left menu select "User Access Settings" and then click on your domain and check Notify Org Admin -> Only when users need admin approval

Hey @VFPA ,

Welcome to Atlassian Community Forum, My name is Chitra and I am part of Jira Cloud support team in Atlassian. I understand you want to know if it is possible to remove the invitation email sent to user when the user Atlassian Account is added and thus the user is invited on a cloud instance through Atlassian Administration portal.

Please note, currently, there is no built-in way to suppress the admin notification email that is sent to users when they are added to a Jira Standard (Cloud) instance. The email notification for user invitations is a default part of Jira Cloud's onboarding process, and thus Atlassian does not provide a native setting to disable or suppress these invitation emails.

I hope this answer your query, have a good day ahead!

Thanks and Regards

Thanks Chitra for the quick reply. Our new users are getting two emails, one when I invite them to our Jira instance (which is what we want) and then a second email when they are added to a Jira project in my instance. This second email is not required because when the user walks the "Accept Invite" process to set up their Atlassian user setup, it leads them to the Jira instance after the "What kind of work do you do?" page. The second email is the one I'm hoping admins can suppress the email notification.

Hi @VFPA ,

Please confirm if the email at 06:53 AM is from Jira application where it looks like the user was granted access to a Project and the email at 06:51 AM is from Atlassian Administration where the user was invited, am I right?

Regards

Chitra

Yes, that's right. The 6:51am email was generated after the user was invited via Atlassian Administration, Directory.

The 6:53am email was generated when user was added to a Jira project.

Thanks

Thanks for confirmation @VFPA .

This is an expected behaviour as the email trigger when a user is invited is from Atlassian Administration portal and the second email is when a user is added to a project and is triggered from the Jira instance.

I have validated, for workitem action in Jira we have option to customise this and disable email however the same is not present for Project.

Hope this helps outline the difference between both the emails and why we cant disable the notification.
