I have an epic that has been accidentally included in a sprint.

Iain Brocklehurst March 18, 2024

It was actually included in the previous sprint, and then when that sprint was closed it was automatically included in the next one. Because it was not visible in the backlog, it got re-included in the next sprint.

How do I move this back to the backlog (or at least out of the sprint)?

Hi, Ian!

There are two ways in which you can remove an epic from a sprint:

  1. From the sprint view click and drag the epic out of the sprint.
  2. From the epic's issue view, remove the sprint from the Sprint field.

Note that doing so won't affect the issues inside the epic, and the process would need to be done for all the required issues.

Hi @Iain Brocklehurst,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

In order to remove it from the sprint you need to go to the issue detail view of the epic and then clear the field Sprint.

Interesting that I could not remove the sprint from the sprint field - there was not option to do this when editing the issue (unclear if this is a permissions issue), but I did manage to workaround this by creating a manual automation trigger to clear the Sprint field.

Ha, I just ran into a similar question :-)

Question is, how did the epic turn up in the Sprint board in the first place?

In our case, someone had changed the issue-type from story to epic in a running sprint.

Attempted solution: Even though I could remove it from the sprint board, I could only push it into the next sprint. But there is would not be visible for backlog planning and then turn up again in the Sprint board for the next sprint.

Solution for us: I configured the 'Sprint' field into the Epic Screen Configuration, then edited and cleared the respective epic.

My issue is slightly different.

I have two Epics that have been accidentally included in the current Sprint, however none of them have a Sprint value attached from the Epic issue itself and I do not see them listed in the Backlog 'Sprint view' but they appear in the Scrum Board where we display the Sprint items.

I do notice that in the Timeline, these two Epics were accidentally assigned with a Sprint value however I cannot remove it.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Thanks,

Pauline
