In JIRA Service Desk can a Customer add a request participant to an issue?

Now that we have the new request participant field in JIRA SD,  is it possible for a customer to add a request participant to an issue?  Or does that have to be done by an Agent?   It would be highly useful to allow a customer to add another customer as a request participant.  (provided that the added participant is a customer within that Service Desk)

thanks Brandon.  that answers my question. I'll watch that (and some other important linked issues)  more closely now.

Jeff, it appears this functionality is coming soon in JIRA Service Desk 2.3:

I can see the customer has ability to add people on the request detail screen, but this is after the ticket has been created. Is there a way to add the request participants / add people option on the (customer) create screen?

Hello? Adding request participants isn't a meaningful feature if it can't be done in ticket creation.
