Is there a way to group custom field values together?

Is there a way to group custom field values together? We have a very long list of multi-select values and would like to group them by category so it is easier for the user. Any recommendation would be appreciated.

Hopefully you see this reply (years later!), but suggesting this in case others have the same question.

No, there's no way to do that.  You'd need to write a new field type with a different layout (or possibly hack the existing field to do it).  There may be something helpful in the marketplace though, I'd start there (I don't think it's right for you, but the checklist add-on as an example)
