Issues in linking jira issues

Mira Czarnetzki January 17, 2025

Hi together,
unlike my colleague, who seems to have the same roles allocated as I, I can't link Jira issues with each other.
Not even ones that I create myself.
I also don't seem to be able to link other users via @

I would appreciate help :)

Thanks,
Mira

This sounds like a permissions issue in Jira Cloud. Let me help you troubleshoot:

For Issue Linking:

  1. First, check if you have the "Link Issues" permission in your Jira project. This is required even for issues you create yourself.
  2. Go to Project Settings > Permissions and look for "Link Issues" permission.
  3. If you can't see this setting, you'll need to ask your Jira admin to grant you this permission.

For @ mentioning users:

  1. Make sure you're a member of the project where you're trying to mention users.
  2. Verify that the users you're trying to mention are also members of the project.
  3. Try typing @ and wait a moment - a dropdown menu should appear with available users.
  4. If no dropdown appears, clear your browser cache and try again.

Hope that with these steps I can help you.

@Mikel Garcia Bartolome thanks for the quick help!
Regarding the linking issue.
I updated my persmissions but still it doesn't work to link the Jira tickets.
Does my role also need to allow linking to the ticket I am trying to link to?
(Background Info: For the project I am working on I want to link to someone elses project)

Thanks :)

Yes, that's a crucial point - for cross-project linking, you need permissions in both projects: both the project where you're creating the link and the project containing the issue you want to link to. This is a common oversight in Jira permissions setup.

Specifically, you need:

  1. "Link Issues" permission in your project.
  2. "Browse Projects" permission in the other project.
  3. "Link Issues" permission in the other project as well

Since you're trying to link to someone else's project, you'll need to:

  1. Check if you have access to view that project at all.
  2. If you can view it, check if you have linking permissions there.
  3. If you don't have these permissions, you'll need to contact the project admin of the other project to grant you the necessary permissions

You can verify your permissions in the other project by:

  1. Going to that project
  2. Clicking Project Settings > Permissions
  3. Or, if you can't see these settings, ask the project admin to check for you

Thanks @Mikel Garcia Bartolome
Since I wasn't able to see my Permissions in the other project I contacted them.

Thanks for the responses :)
