Hey there,

3rd party who left the company set up our Jira board in a way when the task gets moved from "in progress" to "in review" by any developer it gets automatically assigned to product manager/owner. How can we remove this?

We are using Jira cloud

Hi @Ziga N

I'd check these two things...

  • Workflow Post-Functions/Rules
  • Automation

...and see if either of them are making this happen.

Workflow Post-Function/Rules

If your Project is a Company-managed Project, you'll need to be a Jira Admin to resolve this issue. Then...

  1. Go to Jira Settings > Issues > Workflows
  2. Locate the Workflow relevant to your Project
  3. On the right-hand end of the row, select the 3-dots icon > Edit
  4. Select the transition from In Progress > In Review
  5. In the pop-up, select Post Functions
  6. Look for an Assign-based function
  7. If one exists, hover over it and select the "x" symbol on the right-hand side
  8. Publish the Workflow to remove the post-function

If your Project is a Team-managed Project, you only need to be a Project Admin. Then...

  1. Go to Project Settings > Issue Types
  2. Select a relevant Issue Type, then select the Edit Workflow button
  3. Select the transition to In Review
  4. Look for an Assign Issue Rule
  5. If there is one, select it - and press Delete Rule
  6. Update the Workflow for it to take effect

Automation

A Project Admin or Jira Admin might be needed, depending if this is a Project or Global Rule.

To check as a Project Admin...

  1. Go to Project Settings > Automation
  2. Look for a rule which has an Assign Issue Action - specific to your POs
  3. You can deactivate the rule using the toggle (change to grey x = OFF)
  4. From the main rule list, you can also select the 3-dots icon > Remove to delete a rule

If this is a Global Rule, a Jira Admin can view/modify them via Jira Settings > System > Global Automation

Check these two first - and let us know the results :)

There are two places that I would look.

  • check the workflow for a post function. This would be my first guess. Go to project settings then to workflows and edit your workflow look at the transition between in progress and in review. Check there is a post function to automatically assign the issue.
  • check for a possible automation rule. Go to project settings then automation and inspect the rules to see if there's one associated with your transition.

Let me know if you need further guidance on either of these.
