Order By Issues with Epic Rank

Deleted user August 14, 2018

Hi there,

We are using Sprint Boards and have a project in Jira with all of our Epics and then stories attached to the Epics and sub-tasks under the stories.

I have built a KanBan board with one column so that we can drag and drop the epics in the order we want.

I went through and ordered the epics in the priority order and wrote a query to pull out the stories that aren't complete and ordered them by Epic Rank ASC, Priority DESC.

It didn't really do what I expected so we did a re-index of the database and the main ones I was interested in came out at the top of the list like I wanted.

Since then we have added new Epics and put them in the right place. I am about to kick off another re-index but this seems a crazy way to have to do this, especially as a background re-index takes around 5 hours!

I added the epic rank and epic rank (cached) columns to the search results and the new epics I have entered have an Epic Rank of zzzz.

How can we sort this out so that when we make changes to the order of the Epic Priorities the search results on the queries reflect it immediately? What am I missing?

I'm not a Jira expert by any means and we don't really have a Jira Admin here hence me trying to get something working. Any help would be very much appreciated but please bear in mind I may need some help being walked through the solution.

Many thanks in advance

Stuart

Update

I have checked the query again since I have performed a re-index and the fields are not in the right order. We use EasyBI as well and I can see that the rank in Jira does NOT MATCH the rank in EasyBI. Easy BI is correct and Jira is not! How can this be?

Hi Stuart,

A solution might be to configure your kanban board to use Swimlanes based on Epics. And simply use the 'ORDER BY Rank' on your board. This will make sure that the top Swimlane in your Kanban contains all Stories that belong to the highest ranked Epic.

I would not use Epic Rank. Stick to the 1 global Rank that Jira comes with. Even if you had Epic Rank, this would not be an attribute of Stories, so therefore you wouldn't be able to order Stories based on Epic Rank anyway...

So, maybe go for the Swimlanes based on Epics option?

Kind regards, Rik
