Hi everyone,

I am looking for a new project management tool to manage recurring implementations of the same B2B SaaS application.

I noticed that Jira has plenty of templates to choose from. Naturally, none of them fit our workflow. Is it also possible to create my own template?

I have read similar questions that were asked over the past years. There, often, different workarounds were proposed. However, I don't want to have to go through a cloning process of old projects every time.

It should be very ease to start another project or Epic within a project that is based on a template with all the stories, tasks and subtasks (incl. their custom workflows) already created and I only have to change the assignee and TDDs. Is this possible in Jira?

Thank you!

Hello @Jonas Didzoleit

great question so let's start by exploring what is possible without Addon in Jira Cloud:

Possible without Addon

Jira native does not allow to create project or issue templates. The closest we can get is either by creating an automation rule where we specify the issues we want to create. This has an intuitive UI no-code builder, but sadly gets complicated quickly if you need issue hierarchy. Also you would still have to create a new project first manually.

Regarding project creation. Jira native offers the 'Share settings with an existing project' checkbox. This will create a new project that shares the same schemes like workflow scheme and issue type scheme. Sadly there this checkbox is missing out on other elements of projects like issues, components, project lead, default assignee, versions, epics, issue links, issue status, project category, boards, project role assignments, project description and much more.

Possible with Addon

Based on the limitations mentioned above, we've built an addon exactly for your use case.

'Project Templates for Jira' allows to create custom project templates (you can start by simply cloning an existing project).

Inside the custom project template you can specify

  • All project schemes (workflow, issue type, permission...)
  • Project lead, Default assignee, Project description and Project Url

and define source to clone

  • Issues (Including hierarchy, Current status, Issue links, External links, Links to documentation, custom fields...)
  • Components and Versions
  • Project lead and default assignee
  • Project role assignments

But it gets better on top of cloning the elements above, you can additional predefine those elements inside the template to use some template variables like assigning components to the project lead of the new template.

The app has a 30 free trial without any feature limitation (free under 10 users) so give it a go!

Hello @Jonas Didzoleit

If you're seeking for an easy way to start a project from a template by cloning all the issues at once, you can try our app Elements Copy & Sync that allows you to clone and sync a full hierarchy of issues with all their content (summary, description, custom fields, comments, attachments, etc).

You can check our guide here.

You can try the app for free during 30 days (and it stays free under 10 users).

Kind regards,

Clara
