Adding columns to the Board in Free Version

Jacob Romeo September 3, 2024

To whom it may apply,  Hello there. I am a senior in college who is trying to make his first game with six other members. I am the producer of a  7 person team without money; so I want to use Jira's free version. However, I am unable to create additional columns to the board.  I did not notice anything in the documentation or the tutorial videos that said the free version limited the usage of the board.   The configure board and the plus next to the columns don't exist.  Is there any way I can add a column saying "awaiting approval" or am I stuck with three columns?

I've already looked at the links below for help, to no avail.

Hello @Jacob Romeo

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

When you say you want to create a new column on the board do you mean you want to add a new Status value to which you can set the issues?

That is possible with the Free version.

To provide a pointer to the correct documentation we need to know the type of project you are using. Get that information from the View All Projects page under the Projects menu, looking in the Type column.

You did not answer my first question:

When you say you want to create a new column on the board do you mean you want to add a new Status value to which you can set the issues?

I am going to assume that you mean you want to add another Status.

With a Company Managed business project you have to add the Status to the Workflow used by the project.

Go to Project Settings and select Workflow. On the new page you will see the Workflow Scheme assigned to the project and the issue types grouped by the Workflow they use. You probably have only one workflow for all issue types.

If you have sufficient permissions you should see and be able to click the Edit Workflow option on the right side of the screen.

Refer to this page for additional information:

Let me know if you have additional questions.

@Jacob Romeo if you're looking at columns in a Jira board, those are just groupings and they can be changed. Look for: Group by in the top-right-hand side of your board(s).

The default state is to group tasks/issues by status. Here's a guide on how to add additional statuses in Jira Cloud

But it's really up to you to group your tasks/issues any way you want. You could also have columns by assignee if you want to see each person's tasks in one place.

Oh so I will adapt it by setting up additional categories.  Thank you.
