I can no longer clone a JIRA issue using the Clone this issue menu item. The following error message is displayed:
Can't clone this issue. com.atlassian.jira.workflow.WorkflowException: Unable to clear field - customfield_10007 - Sprint
This custom field is not new and never prevented cloning before.
The problem is that the issue is included in a sprint and is inheriting the sprint value. If the sprint is closed then you cannot clone, if it is open you can clear the value. This is a known issue and more information can be found here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirakb/clear-sprint-information-when-cloning-jira-issue-779159157.html

Even if the issue is not included in a sprint, I cannot clone it. Open issues in the backlog also cannot be cloned.

In addition, until recently we've always been able to clone issues regardless of their sprint value or resolution status

Has anybody been able to determine what is causing this issue ? We are experiencing the same issue with no clear resolution.
Any help would be appreciated.

Tried the suggestions but I get the same error. Tried an open/closed sprint no change. Tried cloning an open issue not assigned to a Sprint and got the same error ....I'm using the Cloud based version of Jira!

Look if you have any post functions when creating issues. In my case, we had the clear sprint post function before create issue. Atlassian support asked me to move it after "create issue" and that solved the issue for me.
