Cant remove user from jira board even though I made the board.

Robert Grasso October 20, 2024 edited

I created a jira board without any issue or mention of setting up a site admin, invited people, some of which need to be removed now. I can't do that because I don't have admin access even though I created the board and even though Access tab shows that I am an administrator.

Here's what I understand from the feedback I am getting from the limited links and messages on my journey to remove 1 user from my jira board. Seems like I have to make an admin account with atlassian somehow.. and somehow link my account to the new jira board as an admin with atlassian.. I am so frickin confused.

What I expect: I made the board and can invite people to the board. I expect to be a jira admin to have the ability to remove people if I made the board. Simple.Screenshot_1.png Screenshot_3.png Screenshot_2.png

Hi @Robert Grasso ,

Boards are just a fancy representation of issues fetched by a filter. So, boards in Jira are essentially filters. Creating a board means creating a filter, and sharing a board is the same as sharing that filter.

Please keep in mind that unsharing a board from a user does not mean they won't see the related issues.

To unshare it, simply go to "Filters" in the top navigation bar, click "View All Filters," and find the filter associated with the corresponding board. On the right side, click the three dots and select "Edit." From this panel, you can choose who can view the filter.

By the way, the Jira Product Admin is different from a Project Administrator.

What you see next to your username as "Administrator" is a project role, which means you are the admin of that project. That doesn't necessarily mean that you are a Jira Product Admin, who has the capability to add or remove users from the organization's Jira product.

Thank you for the quick response!

I do not have any filters to choose from.

How do I become the Jira Product Admin of the Jira Board that I created? Why isn't this default?

Why don't I automatically have all privs/full access if I am the one who made the board?

Why is this so complicated?

Hi again @Robert Grasso ,

Thank you for your feedback.

Yes, things can get quite complicated with Jira sometimes. I completely understand your concerns and am here to help.

I apologize for my first response. Although my answer contained true information, it wasn't really applicable in your case since you are on the free plan.

Upon reviewing the photos again, I see that you are on a team-managed project. Just to clarify, Team-managed boards don't depend on a filter (unlike company-managed boards), which is why the filters menu shows that you have no filters.

When you say you created the board, I assume you are referring to creating the project itself, as in team-managed projects, there is only one board, and it belongs to the project itself.

Since you are on the free version of Jira, the permissions are not enabled. Anyone you add to the project is granted admin access to that project and added as a user in the Jira product.

Yes, it can be a bit tricky, but because you are on the free plan and permission features are not available; the idea is that you need to remove the user's access to Jira Product rather than removing them from the project's access. (Since there are no permissions, every project is open to everyone, making it impossible to remove a user from just one project.)

Therefore, you need to go to the manage users section and suspend the user's access. However, bear in mind that to suspend access, you still need organization level admin privileges.

In summary, on the free plan, normal users can create a project and add new users to them, but they cannot remove users.

Only the organization admin(s) can do that.

How do I become an organization admin?

Hi , you have to ask your jira org admin , without him you can't do it  , and also you can to ask him to recreate permission for your project to be able to remove people from your projects in the future. it's not allowed  form Org admin  that is a main issue here i think.

Hi @nika gabadze

Correct me if I am wrong, but in the free version of Jira, I don't recall that removing users from only specific projects is possible, as the permissions are not included in the free tier.

Therefore, Jira Product access must be revoked from the user.
