As far as I know, Custom field types cannot just be migrated to another type.
You'll have to create a new custom field with the correct type and (if needed) migrate the data over.

Dirk is correct about field migration. It may be possible to use the API or a plugin (like Scriptrunner) to copy custom field values between the old and new fields. Cheers!
