Components and epics

K Niharika Samyuktha January 4, 2024

I have a doubt on how to assign the components. What is a component? Do we assign the components to the epics or story? If we assign it to an epic, can we link multiple components to one epic?

Hi @K Niharika Samyuktha  - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Components are like Labels or Tags. But they set values that can be added to a Project by a Project Administrator or Jira Administrator. They are helpful for organizing or categorizing your work. They are especially helpful with reporting.

Yes, you can add multiple components to a single issue (e.g. Epic).

Did you get this accomplished?

Yeah it is done. Apparently we cannot add multiple components to an epic when using the import via csv option.

Is this a Company-managed project? Or Team-managed?

The field "Components" is always a multiselect.

You can think of it as a way to order issues horizontal compared to vertical (Epic > Task > Subtask).

Every component has a lead and a default assignee, so you can use them to order issues to people automatically, otherwise it is just another way to group issues. So it really depends on what you're doing in your project and how many ways of "grouping" you need.

To do what?

What do you want to import per csv?

I am doing bulk upload using csv. So all the epics, user stories everything will be imported per csv.

How to bulk import Components into JIRA Issues | Jira | Atlassian Documentation

Have a look at Option 2 in this documentation. It looks like you need to add multiple "Component" Columns to the csv
