We use Epics for projects, break them down into Stories for groups of work, and break those down into Sub-Tasks for small, bite-sized chunks.

Now, I'm trying to add swimlanes to our Kanban board by function. In this case, if Epic A is a part of Function XYZ, I'd like for all of Epic A's Stories and Sub-Tasks to be in the same Function XYZ swimlane.

What's the best way to accomplish this?

Hello @Henry Prince

Welcome to the community.

How are you identifying that Epic A is part of Function XYZ? Are you setting a field in the Epic that says 'XYZ'? If so, do you have the same field in your stories and sub-tasks?

Do you have multiple Epics assigned to the same Function?

Can Epics be part of more than one Function?

Can child Stories in an Epic apply to different or more than one Function?

Are you working with a Company Managed project or a Team Managed project?

Hi, @Trudy Claspill - thanks for your reply!

How are you identifying that Epic A is part of Function XYZ? Are you setting a field in the Epic that says 'XYZ'? If so, do you have the same field in your stories and sub-tasks?

The identification part has not yet been defined and is wide open at the moment. I'd prefer to only identify Epics as a Function, rather than have to do that on downstream, child tickets as well as this would be a lot simplier.

Do you have multiple Epics assigned to the same Function?

Multiple Epics can be in the same Function.

Can Epics be part of more than one Function?

I'm happy to compromise on complexity and say that one Epic can only be a part of one Function.

Can child Stories in an Epic apply to different or more than one Function?

As above, I think that a reduction in complexity is fine and I can say that everything within an Epic is part of the same function as that of the Epic.

Are you working with a Company Managed project or a Team Managed project?

I'm working with a Company Managed project.

Use queries to define your swimlanes e.g. Function = XYZ, Function = ABC etc

Use automation rules to copy the Function value from Epic parents to child stories. Do the same for stories if you want to copy from the story level to the sub-task level.
