How to give issue creator permission to modify reporter

Liz Ramsey August 10, 2023

Hi friends!

I would like to find the best way to give an issue's Creator the permission to modify that issue's Reporter.

When I edit the Modify Reporter project permission, there is not an option to select the  Creator.  My next thought was to use the "User custom field value" option and create a new custom user picker field that would store the Creator in it.  But I can't think of an easy way to bulk edit all existing issues, since there are so many Creators.  That sounds like a nightmare to update.

If anyone has any suggestions for how to let someone modify the Reporter on the issues they've created, I'd greatly appreciate it!  Thanks! =)

Hi @Liz Ramsey,

Adding the permission Modify reporter to a custom user picker field and then copying creators to this field is a good workaround.

To bulk edit existing issues, you can use the smart value {{creator}} in Automation. That's the example how to copy creators to a user picker field (please replace Hidden Users with your field):

Hi @Kseniia Trushnikova!  Thank you for your reply. I was hoping to avoid editing so many issues with a new custom field, but it does look like that might be the only option.  I really like your suggestion of using an automation and the {{creator}} smart value; that would definitely simplify such a large edit.  Thanks for the tip! =)

What I usually do is add a project role (User, Developer, Admin) or a User Group I've created for all Jira users to be able to update the reporter. You can choose any of the ones above what you currently have circled and that'll help you get where you want.

Hi Nolan!  Thanks for responding!  Those are all great suggestions.  In this case, however, our team wants to narrow the permission to just the individual user who created that particular issue.  So the permission would be different for each issue, depending on the creator.
