I can't move an issue from the backlog to the Kanban board

Michael Werner March 18, 2024

Hello,

we moved from an on-premise installation to the cloud some time ago.

Today I created new issues that went to the backlog. I now want to move them from the backlog to the Kanban board. That doesn't work. When I drag the issue to the board, I see a red circle with a red line. For that project, I am the administrator. The workflow allows for the transition from the backlog to the to-do column on the board. There are 2 transitions, one will pop up a screen when there is no estimated time and the other one will just transition the issue. That worked on our on premise installation but not now.
There was not estimated time for that issue so I thought that maybe the screen is not working. I entered the estimated time in the issue, Now the transition that doesn't have the screen should be used but I still can't transition the issue.

Also, I can't modify the workflow.

What can or must I do? The project is set up as company-managed.

Thanks,

Michael

Hello @Michael Werner

Can you provide a screen image of what you see when you  are not permitted to drag and drop the issue onto the board?

Before today were you able to execute the same actions in the same board on the Cloud instance, without encountering the problem?

I set up a test project with two transitions from the initial status to the first status on the Board for a Kanban board. On the Backlog screen when I dragged an issue from the Backlog section to the list section above (representing the first column of the board) I did not get blocked. After dropping the issue I got a pop-up asking me which transition I wanted to use.

I suspect that there is more going on here then simply the existence of two transitions from the Backlog status to the To Do status, and it make take a Jira Administrator (with access to the workflow) to provide information to help us help you.

Hello Trudy,

Thank you for your reply. Here is the image.

Jira can not move issue.jpg

This was the first time I wanted to move an issue from the backlog to the board for this project since we moved to the cloud.

We are having similar issues on other boards where we can move some issues from one status to the next but can't move other issues.

So I'm afraid your suspicion that there is more going on is correct.

Thanks,

Michael

Is the project Team Managed or Company Managed? It will say which it is at the bottom of the panel on the left when you are viewing the board or Backlog.

If you open the issue for viewing are you able to click on the status button/pull down in the upper right and select the To Do status?

If not, the workflow will need to be examined by a Jira Administrator. There may be a Condition in it that is making the transition unavailable to you.

This is a company-managed project. I can click on the pull down you mentioned and select the ToDo status. This works, the issue is now on the board. I didn't think about that option. Shouldn't that be the same? Now I have a workaround. Thank you. do you have any idea why drag and drop is not working but your idea works? That doesn't make sense to me right now.

So far I haven't been able to replicate your scenario.

I've tried adding Conditions that block me from transitioning the issue to the destination status. That still lets me drop the card into the board issue list area, without the "not allowed" icon, but then bounces it back to the backlog issue list area and shows an error pop up in the bottom left corner.

I have tried two Transitions, one with a validator, and got a pop up that let me select which transition I wanted to use.

I tried having all transitions with a Field Required Validator with the specified field empty. It let me drop the card but then bounced it back to the backlog issue list area and showed an error message pop-up.

I tried have two statuses mapped to the first column, and got a pop-up to select which transition to which status I wanted to use.

At this point without having the details of the workflow I'm not sure what else to check.

Did you try the same actions in a different browser application or in a private browser window? Are there other users having the same experience?

Hi Trudy,

thank you for all the time you spent looking into this. Yes, I have tried different browsers. I think I figured it out just now.

When I have the mouse over ACTDOC-5 (the issue ID), click the left mouse button, and drag it to the board, it is not working.

Now, I have the mouse over the issue description, click the left mouse button, and drag it to the board, it works as it should.

I can replicate this behavior with different issues and on different boards (projects).

That doesn't make sense to me.

Thanks,

Michael
