Need a way to popup a transition screen without pressing a button.

Is there any way to get a transition screen to pop up outside of pushing the button for that transition?  I have tried with jira automation and the only thing you can do there is set the value, but I want to popup the transition screen so that someone has to choose an option.  Basically if someone changes a date I want to be able to popup a field that asks them why they are changing the date.  A single drop down field value that has options they can choose from.  I don't have to use a transition if there is another way to do it.  I have loads of plugins as well, like scriptrunner, etc.  It also doesn't have to be a transition screen.  If there is an option to have another field popup based on setting a different field, that would work as well.

Unfortunately, I don't think this is possible. 

Just like you said, the ideal way to implement this is to have a transition that calls itself and name it "Change date".  Then you have the transition screen with the date field and the comments. You can use a validator on the transition to ensure that they are mandatory fields.
