Some Emails Reflect the User is Tagged in a Comment, Others Don't - why?

Christy Overall January 15, 2019

Hello All-

I have a user who is receiving emails when she is tagged in a comment - some indicate the tag in the subject line, some don't. Is there any specific reason why one email subject line might reflect the tagging, and others don't? She's receiving a lot of Jira emails and is trying to identify urgent ones at a glance.

Thanks!

I'd be interested to look more closely at the specific email notifications.  It's possible they are getting one email because they were @ mentioned, and another completely different email notification because perhaps they are already watching the issue or meet some other notification role such as reporter, assignee, etc.

In cases like that, the subject line of the message would be different depending on what action(s) are taken during the event.  For example, if someone just adds a comment to an issue, that is an event that would trigger notifications.   But if the content of that message contains @ mentions, those users are getting notified via a different means that purely the projects notification scheme settings.

Thanks, Andrew! I didn't think to check assignment- that seems to be a differentiating factor between the two email examples she provided. Standing by for confirmation... thanks again!

Update: she is receiving the standard email (with no "you were mentioned" in the subject line) for sites she is not assigned to. Her role is the same for all records. Any other ideas?

It might help to try to use the Notification helper on the issue itself in Jira to better understand why that user might be getting additional notifications from the @  mention ones.   This utility will let you select the issue, the user, and the event to understand if that user is expected to get a notification given your current settings or not.  But it also gives you more details about your notification scheme setting for that project so that you can see/change this more easily if you want to.

Thanks! I didn't know about the notifictaion helper. It is helpful, but it doesn't explain why she wouldn't receive a "you are mentioned" email every time she's tagged. That's the logic that's unclear - she's trying to prioritize notifications, but it's not easy to tell which emails are getting kicked off because she's tagged vs. someone just leaving a comment.
