Time estimation for different roles

Yael Dvorin November 26, 2019

Hey everyone!

I'm pretty new to Jira and Project Management and would love your help.

I'd like to have a few time estimation fields: R&D estimation and QA estimation.

Does anyone here have a suggestion as to what's the smartest way to do so?

Thank you so much!

Hi @Yael Dvorin

We do that with our Dev estimate and Test estimate - we created 2 customfields (single line text), one for each. There are 2 downsides to this :

  1. Both fields are effectively free-format, so you need to be consistent with what goes in. We follow the Jira time notation e.g. 1w 2d 4h, but the field will happily accept nonsense like w3 or 4g.
  2. These values are stand-alone and don't add to the overall time estimate, so in backlog refining, at the time that we add values to these fields, we also manually add the total to the main "Original estimate" field.

Hi,

I think it depend on the trust you have in your users but for me I would create custom fields in the administration side. Go on "Issues" and select "custom fields" and create "date picker" fields with the name you want. Then add these fields to your create or edit issue type screen.

Thank you for your reply.

I want a time estimation field. for ex: the qa team member says its gonna take him 3 days to check the issue.

Time estimation: 3d
