What happens with the data after deleting unused Custom Fields?

I have a question regarding the deletion of custom fields.  Due to the new feature (Site optimizer tool), we can now identify any unused custom fields in our system.  With that said, if the field contains information and it gets deleted, what happens to the data?  

How is the data handled in this case?

The data the field contained will also be deleted.
