Just a heads up: On March 24, 2025, starting at 4:30pm CDT / 19:30 UTC, the site will be undergoing scheduled maintenance for a few hours. During this time, the site might be unavailable for a short while. Thanks for your patience.
×Hi everyone,
I have an issue to add a specific user as a watcher in a Jira task. The user have the same basic permissions like others. Interestingly, it's possible to assign him the task itself, but not add him as watcher - even as site admin (like me).
Any ideas?
Thanks!
It is actually possible in some permission schemes to assign an issue to a user who doesn't actually have browse permission. I would use the "permission helper" admin tool to check that the user actually has permission to the project.
Thanks for your input Andrew! The issue is solved right now. The user was in the same permission group like the other users of this project, but he was not applied as member of the project itself.

Hi Marc,
That sounds quirky since you are able to browse and find him to assign him the task, it doesn't sound like a 'browse users' permission problem. (although I'll drop the KB article here just in case)

Are you having trouble adding other people as watchers or just him? What do you see when you try to add him as a watcher?

Hi Carolyn,
Thanks for you quick reply. I already check the KB about the 'browse users' permission. It doesn't seem a part of it.
I have troubles to add a specific user as a watcher and he doesn't appear in the selection, but he is assigned to the task. Why I could not select him? Any other users are available.

Hi Marc,
I just tested in my own instance, and it is working fine to add the assignee as a watcher in general.
Could it be some sort of bug with his name and searching it? Have you tried typing the whole name?

Hi Carolyn
I tried to search the user only by name or first name and also with typing the whole name - unfortunately without success. This user does not appear in the list.

Hi Annika
Yes, in my case the user was in the same permission group like the other users of this project, but he was not applied as member of the project itself.
Hope this helps!

Appllied to project how? We have users from other projects who open tickets with us and are able to become watchers. I have a user who can be assigned but his name won't render as a watcher. He's in the employee AD group as everyone else who's name does render.
