Switching users in jira

I wish to import a project from another JIRA instance.

The problem is I have three users that are not in my target instance, so JIRA wishes to create them.

However instead of creating these new users I wish to link all issues, comments etc as well as everything else to  AD users that already exists in the target instance.

That is to say the username is for example Bob in the source instance but Bobby in the target instance.

can i update so that everything pointing to Bob instead points to Bobby or is some arcane SQL-query my only option?

Have you tried renaming the user on JIRA source instance?
