Next to the backlog there is one side panel for versions and one for Epics. Which filter do I change to sort those Epics alphabetically?
I'm having a similar problem with my Epic panel. I have not been able to figure out how to not show the closed Epics, Dragging and dropping doesn't 'stick'. Having to have a single filter for my backlog that drives the Epic order is really annoying. I have my backlog filter set to order by priority, but I don't want to have to look at closed Epics, and similar to the poster who wants to look at only the ones they are working this quarter, I want to order my Epics in the priority that we are currently working on them. My company Jira Admins have not been able to help me solve yet.
is there a way to automatically sort the epics in the backlog view automatically? Dragging them is very laborious if you have lots of epics as I do.

The backlog view works against a query. Have you tried to add an order by-statement to that query?

Changing an order by in the query would change it for stories and epics. Poster just wants to order the Epics alphabetically in the side panel. Unfortunately, it looks like it forces it to share the same order by as the rest of the board. If you are using Epics in the Agile way, then order by rank is correct since the epics should not live forever.

You need to make sure the filter for the board has order by rank as well

@Mikael Skogstrom, I believe they are sorted based on rank value. I think you need to drag them into the correct order.
