how do i remove a task from an epic

i accidentally added a parent (epic) to a task. now i need to remove it. move does not work.

Hi Gordon, 

Additionally if you navigate to the top of the Task right above the Summary by its issue Key and click on the icon for the Parent Epic you will have the option to 'Unlink parent'.

The "move" method works best when you have to do this for multiple issues.  In this case, click on the Parent issue (in the linked issue) and then click on the 'x.'

Note that the "parent" field is not shown in the Jira issue view by default. If needed, see 'Introducing the new Parent field in company-managed projects' for more info.
