Scrum Epic Panel (left) - wrong numbers about issues

Luc Leblanc October 16, 2019

Hi,

I'm on Jira Server 8.x and I'm using Sprint.

In the Backlog, I opened the EPIC panel (on the left). We can see all epics related to the current board. This board is associate to a specific Jira project : PROJECT = "name-of-the-project" ORDER by Rank.

The problem:

For some EPICs, the information displayed in the left panel is wrong. When clicking on the EPIC to expand the detailed information under the name of the issue, we can see numbers :

  • issues,
  • Completed,
  • Unestimated,
  • Estimate.

Some numbers do not correspond to what we can see in the EPIC. I attached a screen shot :

Epic: Documentation for 1.6

  • Issues : 1 (wrong - there's 6 issues in that epic. 3 are done and 3 are in progress)
  • Completed: 0 (wrong - 3 issues are done)
  • Unestimated: 0 (ok)
  • Estimate: 0 (ok)

In the EPIC, we can see all of the issues are in the current sprint (we displayed the field SPRINT in the issue view). But only 1 issue is displayed in the sprint, via the Backlog page.

And there's noting displayed in any other sprint or in the backlog at the bottom of that page.

Verification:

  • Go to Issue View to check what's in the EPIC. We can see the 6 issues.
  • Go to Issues menu / Search for issue: I use the same JQL than the board to display all issues and I can see the 6 issues, all with the correct name of the Epic Link. So those issues are not filter out at that point.
  • Clicking to Jira link : for tis verification, I wanted to be sure everything is well connect together. In the backlog screen, I clicked on the issue related to that EPIC, displayed in the current sprint. It shows on the right side the content of that issue (issue view panel). From there, clicking on the EPIC NAME to go directly to the epic. Information displayed is good. We can the 6 issues.

So, the EPIC and it's 6 issues are well defined. I can see all of them if I use the Jira top menu "ISSUE" by using JQL. The only place where we can't see all the issues for that specific Epic it's in the Backlog/Sprint page.

Note: We have few EPIC with this problem but I didn't find a common thread so far.

Any idea ?

Thanks in advance for your hints :-)

Hey, I'm not sure about the whole picture, but "Completed" - counts issues in the last column from the board column configuration. e.g. if a very right column contains 4 issues - "Completed" = 4

This usually happens because an Epic has child issues that are not included in the board filter. The issue counts in a board will only include issues that appear in that board

You can link to the Epic issues that are outside the scope of the board
