Sort the Backlog view or at least all Issues by the Priority field

Michael UGC Williams January 10, 2024

In this post from 6 years ago:

https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Software-questions/Sort-Backlog-by-Priority/qaq-p/892456

This feature was mentioned as being worked on. As of Jan 2023:

https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Core-Server-questions/How-to-sort-the-backlog-by-priority-high-to-low/qaq-p/2231687

The feature seems to be possible but I cannot make it work following the directions.

I'm on the Project page, in the Backlog view. Along the top I've created a custom filter.

I've labeled all the issues related to a topic and choose the Label filter and the backlog filters out to that label only.

I run my custom "filter" and it selects the correct group of Issues but doesn't order them.

I did find a sort of work around.

  1. Go to the Issues view within your project
  2. On the far right click JQL
  3. in the JQL field that opens up under the Issues heading, put your filter
  4. e.g. project = "SS New UI" and assignee = currentUser() ORDER BY priority DESC

This seems to work and sorts the issues into priority order.

Hello @Michael UGC Williams

As noted in the second post you referenced, Quick Filters can't be used to change the sort order of your items.

The ONLY way to change the sort order of the items in the board is to change the ORDER BY clause in the underlying filter on which the board is based, as you discovered. However, using anything other than "Rank" in the ORDER BY clause will block the ability to use the drag-and-drop feature to re-order individual issues in the board.
