The new external system import is awful

Ryan Haman July 18, 2024

Atlassian is replacing the current external system import on July 31. I just tried using it and it is awful. I'm focusing on the CSV import as we are importing from a couple very old ticketing systems.

  • You have to import into a new project.
    • You can't build a project first with all of your schemas, permissions, etc.
    • Makes it more difficult to test your imports -- you have to delete your new project if you need to change something
  • As far as I can tell, it won't update existing tickets since you have to import into a new project
    • This really kills me. I've had multiple use cases in the past where I've needed this
    • In my current situation, we are in a transition period. With a couple of teams I've migrated I would import tickets from the old system daily. We would then use the scrum board in Jira during our standups so the team could get acclimated to it.  This has been great for us and made the transition easier.
  • It has to be CSV but I prefer tab delimited. While they have a field to define the delimiter (like the old way), it can never get past the field mapping if you do tab-delimited.

Has anyone else tried this yet?

It doesn't show as available for me. Here we are on 8/5 and it still shows as being rolled out on July 31st.
