Unable to Map Custom Project Issue Key Using External System Import

Jade Tran June 3, 2025

I've been trying to create custom starting values for the project issue keys using the External System Import to upload a CSV file that has only the following data:

Column A, Row 1: Issue Key

Column A, Row 2: ECO-13999

Column B, Row 1: Summary

Column B, Row 2: Test

However, when I try to map the fields upon upload, Issue Key or Project Issue Key or any similar system field isn't available. Did Jira remove this feature? How else would I be able to start the first item as ECO-14000?

Hi Jade - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

You cannot create work items with set issue keys like that. Jira will create the key with the next one in the sequence for that project. If you include an Issue Key in the CSV and do the import, Jira will try to do an Update to an existing work item with that same key. If it doesn't find one, and it won't from what you are saying, then it will fail to do anything.

My apologies, I thought you were trying to start the issues from an earlier number in the existing ones.

So, your problem is that you can't map the issue key because it doesn't show up? If so, try looking for "work item key" after the recent name changes.

Make sure you are going through Settings > System > External system import route and not directly through the project or the advanced search.
