Unique custom fields

Hi all,

Just wondering if we can make a field that must have a unique number compared to other issues with the same field.

The use case is that we are planning to use JIRA in addition to our secure ticketing system.  Each of our incidents in the for ticketing system has a unique ID and it would be nice to prevent duplicates in the JIRA system.

There's no field type that can support that on Cloud, that I can work out.

Is there any server way to do this?  I'm using the cloud trial right now but if my company goes with JIRA we will use the server mode.

I think there are a couple of add-ons in the marketplace, and you can write validators that could check that a new or updated issue has a unique value
