What is the proper way to use "@mentions" in the comments of Activity Stream widget

When using the Activity Stream widget on my dashboard the "@mentions" in the comment sections do not link to a user profile like it does when using the "@mentions" in a comment in the open issue. 

Action:

1. In the Dashboard widget Activity Stream click on the "comment" link for a issue
2. type @with the appropriate user name 
3. click "add"

Result: the comment is added as typed

Expected Result: the "@mention" gets re-formatted to a link to the user profile

What happens if your type:  [ ~user] ?

Yes! that works! Adding a bracket, then a tilda before the "user name" creates a link! Terrific!
