We have a timeline view with literally no filters beyond showing from Roadmap to Epic. In it, some Epics and Intitiatives stop showing when marked as Closed (Done), while others keep showing. Why is this?
To make matter more strange, I had a closed Intitiative that was showing on the timeline (item A) and an Epic on another Initiative that would disappear when Closed (item B). I tried moving the Epic, item B, under item A to see what happened, and now both items don't show when Closed; despite item A originally showing when closed before the Epic was moved under it.
Is this a bug? What may be happening?
Hi @Andres Cappiello
Welcome to the Atlassian Community!
I found this article in Community, where it is said that:
By default, Advanced Roadmaps doesn’t display issues completed in Jira Software more than 30 days ago. You can adjust this timeframe to suit your planning needs.
To adjust the number of completed issues displayed in your plan:
Select Plan settings from the left side navigation.
Select Exclusion rules.
Enter the number of days you’d like completed issues to stay in your plan in the Exclude any completed issues after field. Advanced Roadmaps will automatically save your updates.

See that article.

Sadly this is not the case, the rules are set as the maximum of 3000 days. I believe this has to be a bug. I've cloned the Epic, and the Clone does continue to show on the Timeline even after Closed.

Dear @Andres Cappiello
I think we can do these checks.
Verify the Resolution for the disappearing issue:
Open the Epic in Jira.
Scroll to the Resolution field → if it set something like “Done” or “Fixed”, it’s truly resolved.
If the clone (that still shows) has no Resolution, that explains the difference.
Test:
Remove the Resolution value (set it to None) temporarily — the Epic should reappear on the timeline.

Yes, tried it and double checked, but all items, showing or not, have a Resolution field completed in the same way.

Dear @Andres Cappiello
Try to compare issue metadata side-by-side
Pick one Epic that disappears when Done, and one that stays.
Compare fields: Start date, End date / Target end, Fix version, and any custom date fields your plan uses.
See if one has a missing or outdated date that causes it to fall outside the timeline window.
Try Inspect plan filters/issue sources JQL
Go to Plan settings → Issue sources and see if there’s any filter (JQL) that excludes closed issues under certain conditions.
Also, check the View / Filter settings in the plan: sometimes filters beyond the exclusion rules hide items.
Toggle “Show completed issues” / full hierarchy option
In the view settings of the plan, there’s often a toggle (or checkbox) to “show completed issues / include Done issues”. Try toggling it to see whether disappearing items reappear.
Also check whether “Show full hierarchy” is enabled — if you have filters excluding some levels, full hierarchy may force context items to show (or hide) differently.

Dear @Gor Greyan
Thank you for your detailed response. I have checked all of this and found no solution still. I have even cloned a ticket that doesnt show on my timeline, and despite having every field the same, the cloned ticket does show. I am even more convinced this is a strange bug affecting specific tickets.

Hi @Andres Cappiello
Thanks for the information.
I think you can open a support ticket to check that also on Athe tlassian side.

Welcome to the community.
Some suggestions from my end.
The Epic's or other issues with status Done have a resolution set?
Are there exclusions set on the plan, or check the resources of the plan, if these include filters, check the filters.
Or what is set as the retention period for done items on the plan? by default this is 90 days, you could limit this, as this is based on the Done status category set for the issue.

All items have a resolution set. No exclusions on the plan, nor filters. Retention period is at max, set way longer than these items.
It's quite frustrating.

There could be an issue with the plan, I have seen and encountered this.
Can you create a duplicate plan, using the same sources and see how this shows the issues?
