can a board display two projects using custom workflow?

Hello guys,

i stumbled around this sentence in the atlassian support "However, you can only use the simplified workflow if your board represents a single project."

i find it odd because they are basically saying i can't put in a board two projects that both use a simplified worflow?

i can't use a filter either to display issues from two projects in which one uses a simplified workflow and the other uses the custom?

i didn't understand this sentence honestly and i would really appreciate your help

Hello @Ben Rejab Rim

Can you provide a link to the document where you found that statement? There may be context around the statement that helps clarify it, but we need to see the reference.

I think you are referencing this document:

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/use-the-simplified-workflow/

When a project uses the "simplified workflow", the project is still using a workflow that is specific to that project. But the content of that workflow is consistent with the simplified workflow.

If the user has sufficient permissions, then from a board that references only that one project the user may be able to make changes to the workflow.

If the board references multiple projects that use the "simplified workflow" it is referencing two projects that are using two different workflow entities, though both may be consistent with the "simplified workflow". In that case the user would not be able to make changes to the workflow from the board because it would be unclear to Jira which project's workflow as the target of the changes.

If the board is referencing a project that does not use a simplified workflow, then in some cases and with appropriate permissions a user can change the project back to using a simplified workflow from within the project's board configuration.

The additional limitation on this is it can be done only if the board is referencing one project. Again, that is because Jira would not be able to determine which project's workflow you wanted to change if the board referenced multiple projects.

You absolutely can create a filter that references multiple projects with different workflows (simplified, jira, or customized), and then create a board from that saved filter. You will not be able to modify the workflow for either project from that board, nor from the board would you be able to force any of the referenced project to use the simplified workflow.

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

That sentence looks wrong to me, but I don't know the context in which it was written.

When you simplify a workflow, Jira can only do it if all the projects that could be included in the board are currently sharing the same single workflow.

You can simplify a workflow if the filter is "Project in (A, B, C)", but it's not possible if your filter is "Project in (A, B, C) OR labels = MrFlibble" because MrFlibble could be added to any issue in any project, and I have never found a Jira system (except empty ones) with only one workflow in use.

You can create a filter, and hence a board, that include many projects, whatever their workflows, but you won't be able to simplify the workflow for it.

Ak, ignore me, I misread the Cloud flag.  Only the last line applies.
