×I have used Microsoft's VSTS for quite some time. And the good part that they have done is to have hierarchy of Epics -> Features -> Product Backlogs -> Tasks/Bugs and also they clearly linked and displayed too.
In Jira,
Story = Requirement
Task = Steps to achieve the story.
So they should be ideally linked.
Suggestion
Currently Story and Tasks cannot be linked in Jira. We can create subtasks but then it does not appear clearly in a hierarchical structure in display which VSTS does pretty well.
If we can have a structure like Epics --> Features --> Product Backlogs --> Tasks/Bugs structure and also their display in hierarchical format, it will be very useful
Hello Niladri,
Welcome to Atlassian Community.
Once you already can rename sub-tasks with any names you want (Story, bug, etc), I think that the pain point you are talking about is the limited hierarchy levels available on JIRA, have I understand that properly?
Putting my thoughts in a few words about your feedback, I can only say: You are correct.
The functionality you mentioned would really help to better organize and structure the work when we are talking about complex scenarios on JIRA. That's the reason we have created the feature request below to improve it, adding one more level in the JIRA hierarchy:
- Sub-issues should be able to contain their own sub-issues
Please, feel free to vote and watch this feature request to increase its priority and also be aware of any updates about it.
For now, we have two plugins that can give you the functionality you are looking for:
1 - For JIRA Server, Structure for JIRA Projects - This plugin allows you to create custom hierarchies on JIRA.
2 - For JIRA Cloud, Portfolio - This plugin allows you to create another issue type above the hierarchy level of Epics.
Please, let me know if this information helps, Niladri.
