is there any way where if a user added in Outlook will be added automatically in Jira ?

Krishna April 23, 2019

Hi,

Currently, we are on Jira Cloud. We have some groups in Outlook if we add a person in Outlook group, is there any way the same person will be added to the respective group in Jira cloud automatically?

Thanks,

Krishna

Hello Krushna,

This would be an excellent and simplified option to have, but the case is that Microsoft Active Directory is a bit complicated and separates AD permissions groups from distribution groups within Exchange/Office365. Meaning, when you add a user to a group within Outlook they’re only added to the distribution group on the mail side. This type of change will not impact permission/security groups within Active Directory.

A workaround would be to have PowerShell scripts sync your specified distribution groups with your permissions groups within AD. While this may be an option for some, most won’t do this due to the possible permission and auditing issues that may be presented.

More about the differences between these two types of groups may be found at a Microsoft forum which is located at the difference between distribution group and security group.

I hope this proves helpful and you’re able to find a simplified way to manage your users and access.
