parentEpic() on Advanced search reference - JQL functions 

The next-gen project contains Epics with child issues with Stories and Tasks and are in-turn linked to Sub-Tasks.
Originally, the JQL filter "parentEpic" was used to retrieve all issues and Sub-Tasks.
All it does now is return the Epic.

parentEpic = ABC-123

Epic in JQL does not work with Next-gen projects.
