Successfully using automation rules requires learning and experimentation.  

Please consider these things to help do that:

• Create a free, test instance of Jira Cloud, and experiment with different rule and project types
• When creating rules to experiment, write to the audit log rather than performing issue-changing actions.  Most rules like this do not count toward the usage limits, enabling a lot more practice / experimentation.
• Use teamwork: when deciding how to build a rule, explain the problem-to-be-solved to a teammate and perhaps have them review / test it with you
• Talk to your Jira site admin, as they may have experience with rules and documentation on the ones already used in the site
• There is an entire product area in the community for automation rules.  Read the articles, discussions, and questions to learn how to solve problems with rules.  Enable "watching" for this area to see updates.  https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Atlassian-Automation/ct-p/automation
• Carefully read the information on the service limits and packaging changes.  Experimentation (or poorly crafted rules) can quickly use up the usage limits.

• At least once per day, review the status pages for Jira and the automation engine to learn availability and what could go wrong in rule usage
