It seems like there has been no huge changes or enhancements for Trello? I am wondering if it's becoming defunct? Should I start looking for something new and start moving my work and personal life over?
So many requests for changes and improvements?!
Is there a power up or third party to change the layout of boards? Particularly wanting to collapse some lists while working on others but still wanting to have them all there, not filter them. I have so much wasted space and hate moving so far horizontally. Trello works so well, but this function just seems so simple!!! I use this for My whole family and work. I'd love to group family members under each other, and have them collapsed when not used but easily to expand one to get info/add something and collapse again!!!
Do I find something else?
@Courtney M - A feature to collapse lists on a board already exists. Are you looking for Collapsible List support on mobile?
I know I can collapse lists. But collapsing them and also sorting them vertically not just horizontally is what I am after. Even when collapsing lists, the scrolling along horizontally is a lot. As well as the ease of grouping some boards under each other would not only make it aesthetically more pleasing but functionally.

Until 3 months ago, I was kind of thinking the same thing (that it was just maintained)
But recently a bunch of new things are happening:
So calling Trello dead would be wrong...
That being said, it is always a matter of opinion what is most important to you was me vs others. Personally I more like you that wish a more visually intelligent board and personally don't care at all about the mirror, inbox and calendar feature, and while the complete card status is huge on my wishlist, IMHO the implementation Trello chose i poor/wrong in mis-reusing an existing field :-(
But for others the above features are what they been longing for for years and used 3rd party PowerUps to mimick
So the Trello team can't please everyone and this time around it was not our ideas that was chosen.
Personally as a Developer I actually made my own GUI on top of Trello to "Fix" its shortcomings of wasted space, but what is perfect to me is not perfect to you
Same goes for all software... My phone is not 100% as I want it. This Forum is not 100% As I like it (example no copy/paste of images)

Change isn't always a good thing and change for changes sake definitely isn't recommended...
As much as I'm a Trello fanboy and, I'm not afraid of criticising Atlassian or even Trello when necessary but I have some thoughts on this...
The lack of change with Trello from 2020 until 2024 has been coupled with us seeing Atlassian do everything in their power to shift Trello users to Jira (really bad and tone-deaf idea by the powers that be at Atlassian IMO).
As a Trello consultant, I saw a period where people were moving from Trello because they were nervous about the future of Trello, they felt like Trello wasn't evolving like the competition and lastly they were swayed by the shiny new features of other tools.
The standard migrations tended to be towards the likes of Monday.com and Clickup.
In 2024, I saw 2 things happening (within the consulting world).
My theory is that people were realising that they didn't need all the shiny new things, other tools are too complicated/heavy/burdensome or they realise that Trello is more than enough for their needs.
Where is the ramble going?
Trello is truly unique compared to all the other tools fighting each other. It is stable, flexible, simple and powerful. More than that, it is accessible to so many more people to use in work and personal life than any of the competition.
The issue with this is that any changes have to be really well considered. It has to be a change that improves the product for the broadest audience possible.
True, Trello didn't have any new features for almost 3 years, while Atlassian pursued a terrible strategy but since 2024, there have been features released in a steady flow and I suspect that will continue through 2025.
There are definitely many ways in which you can structure your Trello workspace that will not only make it feel fresh but also be manageable and fit your needs as they are today.
The example you have given can definitely be achieved with Trello as it stands today.
There are many resources on this community, the WorkLife Blog and much much more. We also do loads on Trello Trailblazers, an Atlassian Community totally dedicated to Trello

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it. I can see both views and it is good to see both sides. Different opinions and views due to our experiences and I guess I have only dabbled on the surface. I guess, it's hard to find and know where to go and how to know more. I will look into both the worklife blog and Trello trailblazers in the hope of not only improving my Trello Workspace, but learning to things to maximise my experience and interaction with Trello. If there is any other ways of learning and experiencing more, please let me know.

@Dreamsuite Mike Are you able to direct me to any blogs or pieces that give options or how to sort the boards differently and vertically? I've searched and googled etc. Whilst I have found some chrome extensions I am not sure if this is the best option.

Its hard to give you a huge amount of guidance without seeing how you're set up but to start you can collapse and expand lists already:

The shortcut key \ is particularly useful to quickly expand/collapse lists, or shift + \ to collapse all...
I'd recommend looking at workspace table view:

Also power-ups such as:
