Single user notifications

I use Trello to manage my daily tasks. I can't figure out why I don't receive email notifications about deadlines when I assign tasks to myself. However, if I assign them to another user, the deadline notifications arrive by email. Can you explain why? I'd like to receive email notifications about deadlines even if I assign them to myself.
