I have a parent page that has addendum documents that i want others to edit.  Can I make the  document thumbnail open in edit mode?

You should use the macro office word

This certainly does bring the document text into the page.  is there a way to allow track changes to be applied?

mmm I think no, but try to see the page History after an edit to the document
